ENERGY EFFICIENCY
& SUSTAINABILITY

Energy Efficiency is simply the process
of doing more with less. The goal is to accomplish the same tasks and functions as before while using less energy. From the building perspective, it is usually best to approach energy efficiency measures according to the appropriate site and building system. In addition, the greatest savings and performance are realized through an integrated design process (particularly for new construction).

Common areas of focus include:

  • Site planning, landscaping and hardscaping
  • Building envelope/shell (foundation, walls, and roof)
  • Mechanical (HVAC&R, water heating, pumping)
  • Electrical (motors, transformer, etc)
  • Lighting and Lighting Controls

Environmental Sustainability has been defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. In daily practice, many opportunities exist to consider environmental sustainability. The following are a few possible environmentally sustainable practices.

  • Facility Management can include installing water-saving devices such as low-flow toilets and aerators on sink fixtures; maximizing energy efficiency in lighting, heating and cooling; and employing green building techniques in maintenance and renovation practices.
  • Landscaping can include reducing or eliminating building and grounds landscape to conserve water; monitoring watering systems to use only when needed; using water retention basins for irrigation purposes while mitigating storm water management costs.
  • Manufacturing can include implementing energy and water efficiency measurement systems and pollution prevention practices in various processes; using reusable and recyclable transport packaging.

Economic Sustainability is the term used to identify various strategies that make it possible to utilize available resources to best advantage. The idea is to promote usage of those resources that is both efficient and responsible, and likely to provide long-term benefits. It often seems as if advances in sustainability are so concentrated on the environmental issues that insufficient attention is directed to the importance of preserving economic viability.

Profile Energy will analyze how your built environment uses energy, and recommend more efficient technologies and practices which should balance Environmental Sustainability with Economic Sustainability.
